read together to talk in depth.
The book tells the story of a young Ethiopian girl, who grew up in a small, traditional village. From a young age she is required to work hard in the fields alongside her family – to plow, sow, and harvest under the scorching sun. Her life is full of work, responsibility and expectations, but also small moments of dreams and aspirations for a different future. When she reaches the age of only 13, her life changes suddenly: her family decides to have her married, as is customary in the local tradition. She is forced to leave her parents’ home, her mother and brother, and everything she knew and loved – and move to a new home with a husband she barely knows.
This is a story about loneliness and the loss of childhood – alongside the discovery of inner strength, resilience and hope, a personal journey within a complex reality, and about a young girl trying to find her voice and her place in the world.
